What is SHARC

SHARC is described in an article from 1991, and in the release notes from the original distribution. Here is a quick summary. The data is based on a collection of CDs consisting of individually performed notes of all the standard instruments of the orchestra, one recording for each note in the respective instrument's playable range. For each note, a middle portion of the recording was chosen, during the note's steady state, and a spectrum analysis was performed. The amplitudes and phases of all the harmonics of the pitch's fundamental frequency up to a ceiling of 10kHz was saved and forms the content of SHARC.

SHARC Web Services

I am developing some web services for on-demand displays of SHARC data and graphic plots.

The Original Distribution

Read the original documentation. Note: The description of SHARC data is accurate in this file, but many of the details about how the data appears in the file applies only to the original distribution. The XML format (above) renders the data in a different manner.

Download the original distribution, a g-zipped tar file (which WinZip can unpack).
